Karen Blythe Interview

When Karen Blythe set out to find a horse for a client, she didn’t expect to find one she’d fall for herself. But as she walked past a yard, everything changed. There he was — Stryker K, now affectionately known as “Slick.” It was love at first sight. Bred by Nirrelle Somerville, Slick had that rare presence: a combination of elegance, intelligence, and an undeniable spark.

From the very beginning, Slick has exceeded expectations. At the 2025 Victorian Dressage Festival, he claimed the 4-year-old Champion title, announcing himself as a serious young talent. The momentum carried on to the 2026 PSI Dressage & Jumping with the Stars, where he not only won his 4-year-old class but delivered a breathtaking performance to take out the prestigious Champion of Champions — an extraordinary achievement for such a young horse.

This past weekend brought even more special moments. Karen was overwhelmed with pride after receiving outstanding scores, including a perfect 10 for submission from an international judge — a moment that moved her to tears. The result has sparked excitement far beyond the arena, with the score creating a buzz across social media.

Behind every great horse-and-rider partnership is a strong team. Karen is quick to acknowledge the people who have supported her journey. Her coach, Justine Greer, has been instrumental — not just as a mentor, but as a trusted friend and constant source of guidance. Close friend Kate Murry has also been by her side every step of the way, travelling, supporting, and cheering them on. As Karen says, “You can’t compete in this sport without a team — it’s all teamwork.”

Looking ahead, the focus turns to tomorrow’s guest rider session. Karen will be up early for arena familiarisation, excited to watch Kallista Field ride Slick. It’s an opportunity to gain valuable insight and affirmation of his training and rideability — an important step in his development.

After the Sydney CDI, Slick will enjoy a well-earned break before preparing for the 5-year-old classes later in the year. Karen is committed to letting him set the pace, carefully guiding his progression with patience and respect.

For now, one thing is clear: Slick is a horse with a very bright future — and this is only the beginning.
